Crowe slams Council over Bully Boy\u00a0 threat to residents<\/strong><\/span>

Sinn F\u00e9in TD Se\u00e1n Crowe has described as unacceptable, the outrageous the bully boy tactics being used by \u00a0D\u00fan Laoghaire\/ Rathdown County Council in \u00a0threatening to send debt collectors to the homes of residents who have fallen behind with their bin payments including many pensioners.<\/span>
<\/span><\/div>\n


Deputy Crowe has been contacted by a number of residents and is aware of one pensioner who he said “was shocked and extremely upset” to discover that the Council were threatening her with \u00a0debt collectors over a questionable debt.<\/span>
<\/span><\/p>\n


Deputy Crowe said::<\/span>
<\/span>
Elderly \u00a0residents who in some cases were not even aware that they were in arrears are now \u00a0being \u00a0informed officially by letter that they have to face debt collectors if they do not pay up.<\/span>
<\/span><\/div>\n


\u201cOne woman who contacted me, a pensioner, was visibly shocked on receiving this latest threatening letter from the Council.<\/span>
<\/span><\/p>\n


The 80 year old \u00a0had previously been informed that she owed nothing for her bin collection service.<\/span>
<\/span>
The Council, then discovered that they had made \u00a0an error \u00a0 and she was landed with a large bill which she contested as being unfair and unreasonable.<\/span>
<\/span>
This elderly woman is one of a number now receiving letters from a Debt Collection Agency.<\/span>
<\/span><\/div>\n


The threat of and use\u00a0 of debt collectors \u00a0by Dun Laoghaire\/Rathdown \u00a0against elderly residents is outrageous and is dragging their collection recovery \u00a0to a new low. <\/span>
<\/span><\/p>\n


\u201cThis is the latest \u00a0bully boy tactic being used by Dun Laoghaire \/Rathdown Council to recover monies and they should desist. <\/span>
<\/span><\/div>\n


They should engage with residents who have fallen behind with their payments to ensure an orderly and a reasonable payment plan is put in place.<\/span>
<\/span>
\u201cThe Council need to take account of the current financial climate, the unemployment crisis and the severe stress which many of their residents are under.<\/span>
<\/span>
\u201cThe firing off of threatening letters \u00a0in this manner especially to elderly residents is completely unacceptable and needs to stop.”<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
