{"id":265,"date":"2011-07-02T12:40:19","date_gmt":"2011-07-02T12:40:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/patients-in-danger-at-tallaght-hospital\/"},"modified":"2011-07-02T12:40:19","modified_gmt":"2011-07-02T12:40:19","slug":"patients-in-danger-at-tallaght-hospital","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/patients-in-danger-at-tallaght-hospital\/","title":{"rendered":"Patients in Danger at Tallaght Hospital"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #4f4f4f; font-size: small;\"><strong>Patients\u00a0in Danger\u00a0at\u00a0Tallaght Hospital<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif; font-size: x-small;\"><strong><br \/>Dublin South West TD Se\u00e1n <span class=\"il\">Crowe<\/span> has said he shares many of\u00a0the concerns expressed by The Health  Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) who today highlighted the fact  that Tallaght Hospital is not effectively managing the risks to patients  requiring acute admission.<\/strong><\/span> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif; font-size: x-small;\">Deputy Se\u00e1n \u00a0<span class=\"il\">Crowe<\/span> who lives in Tallaght and is long time supporter of the hospital and member of the\u00a0Tallaght\u00a0Hospital Action Group said: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif; font-size: x-small;\">\u201cComing within a week of\u00a0a damning  assessment by Dublin City Coroner Dr Kieran Geraghty, who in the inquest  into the death of Kilnamanagh man\u00a0 Thomas Walsh described Tallaght  Hospital as being a \u201cvery dangerous place\u201d the similar concerns  expressed by the HIQA must serve as a wakeup call for the Hospital  Administration and the new\u00a0Health Minister James\u00a0O&#8217; Reilly <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif; font-size: x-small;\">\u201cIt is clear that the continual  gutting of funding has severely impacted on services at Tallaght  Hospital. The A&amp;E Department is\u00a0 the busiest in the country yet it  is understaffed and under resourced. It is unacceptable, that a hospital  designed to originally cater for 350.000 annually is now expected to  cope with a catchment area of over 530,000 people <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif; font-size: x-small;\">\u201cI welcome the fact that the HIQA  has published the terms of reference for its statutory inquiry into the  safety and governance of care at the hospital&#8217;s Emergency Department. I  understand that the terms of reference, the inquiry will assess the  quality, safety and governance, and accountability for services provided  to patients who attend the\u00a0Accident\u00a0&amp;\u00a0Emergency Department.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif; font-size: x-small;\">&#8220;This inquiry will also look at  where appropriate, specific patient cases\u00a0 and an examine\u00a0if the  hospital has been effective in managing risks to patients.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif; font-size: x-small;\">\u201cThe  death of Thomas Walsh\u00a0 who attended the hospital with severe ankle  pains, tragically exposed the extent of the problems at the hospital.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif; font-size: x-small;\"> &#8220;The coroner\u2019s report highlighted  how he had been moved away from the emergency department to a so-called  &#8216;virtual ward&#8217;, a corridor area with no real facilities like\u00a0oxygen,  monitors or life saving specialised equipment. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif; font-size: x-small;\">\u201cThis latest finding\u00a0is a massive  indictment on how this State Health apparatus\u00a0treats its citizens  whenever they\u00a0become ill and need treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif; font-size: x-small;\"> &#8220;It also emerged that\u00a0last year in  the Emergency Department a patient suffered a cardiac arrest on a chair  while awaiting admission.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif; font-size: x-small;\"> \u201cDespite  the dedication of its overstretched staff, Tallaght Hospital is failing  the people who depend on its services when\u00a0presenting \u2013 the lack of  resources means it is\u00a0 not currently\u00a0able for the demands being place on  the system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif; font-size: x-small;\"> This Government\u00a0needs to urgently\u00a0  address the problems of resources and key personnel\u00a0in Tallaght\u00a0as a  matter of the utmost priority.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif; font-size: x-small;\">If they don&#8217;t, then more and  more\u00a0families will\u00a0 face \u00a0further\u00a0heartbreak in what is supposed to be a  modern flagship healthcare facility.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Patients\u00a0in Danger\u00a0at\u00a0Tallaght Hospital Dublin South West TD Se\u00e1n Crowe has said he shares many of\u00a0the concerns expressed by The Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) who today highlighted the fact that Tallaght Hospital is not effectively managing the risks to patients requiring acute admission.
