Crowe\u00a0supports Tallaght Hospital<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

South Dublin West Sinn F\u00e9in TD Se\u00e1n Crowe joined members of the Tallaght Hospital Action Group this afternoon protesting at the cuts being imposed on Tallaght Hospital and the loss of services that\u00a0has endangered the lives of patients.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Crowe, who\u00a0lives in\u00a0Tallaght, is a member of the <\/span>Tallaght Hospital Action Group,and<\/span><\/span> has campaigned tirelessly for better services for the hospital which recent\u00a0figures show is the busiest in the county.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Last week the <\/span><\/span>Health Information<\/span><\/span><\/a> and<\/span> Quality Authority confirmed it is to launch an investigation into Tallaght\u2019s Emergency Department, following concerns about patient care. <\/span>Today\u2019s protest is a clear signal to the government that the people of Dublin demand a properly funded and functioning facility that can meet the healthcare needs of its citizens regardless of their social or economic background. For too many years, we have had to endure a two tier healthcare system that benefits the wealthy and debases the basic rights of ordinary people.<\/p>\n

\u201cClearly, Tallaght Hospital is in a state of crisis and this was\u00a0clearly\u00a0illustrated earlier in the year when a local man, Thomas Walsh, tragically died after being admitted to the hospital in what was later described as a \u2018Virtual\u00a0 Ward\u2019 \u2013 an area in a corridor awaiting a bed.\u00a0The County coroner\u00a0after hearing of the case,\u00a0 described Tallaght as being \u2018a very dangerous place.\u2019 for patients.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cToday\u2019s demonstration is about securing additional resources for Tallaght Hospital, as well as solidarity protest in support of the staff\u00a0working there, including the doctors and nurses who despite their dedication find themselves stretched to breaking point.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>\u201c<\/span>This facility is funded to look after 350,000 people but in reality cares for 500,000, making it the busiest hospital in the country. It also dealt with\u00a0 93,016 emergency presentations\u00a0last year\u00a0and its\u00a0Accident& Emergency Unit is regularly overflowing onto its corridors\u00a0with patients on trolleys.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>The current crisis in Tallaght mirror the problems facing many hospitals throughout the state.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Health care and its delivery should be an automatic right not a privilege.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>People voted for change in the last election.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Unfortunately they have seen very little of it\u00a0when it comes to the rollout of a first class Health system <\/span>that is fit for purpose and able to meet the needs of those who are sick and in need of medical care.\u201d
