{"id":288,"date":"2011-08-05T10:42:50","date_gmt":"2011-08-05T10:42:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/crowe-calls-on-minister-to-intervene-in-tallaght-hospital-data-breach\/"},"modified":"2011-08-05T10:42:50","modified_gmt":"2011-08-05T10:42:50","slug":"crowe-calls-on-minister-to-intervene-in-tallaght-hospital-data-breach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/crowe-calls-on-minister-to-intervene-in-tallaght-hospital-data-breach\/","title":{"rendered":"Crowe calls on minister to intervene in Tallaght Hospital data breach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Crowe calls on minister to intervene in Tallaght Hospital data breach<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 Sinn F\u00e9in TD for Dublin South West Se\u00e1n Crowe has called on Health<br \/>\u00a0 Minister James Reilly to intervene to ensure that Tallaght Hospital<br \/>\u00a0 reconsiders its policy of outsourcing transcription services in light of<br \/>\u00a0 reports of a data breach of patient information and growing unemployment<br \/>\u00a0 in the Tallaght area.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 Deputy Crowe was speaking today after reports that the hospital will<br \/>\u00a0 continue to outsource transcription services to the Philippines.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 He said:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u201cReports today that Tallaght Hospital will continue to outsource the<br \/>\u00a0 transcription of medical consultation reports and letters to the<br \/>\u00a0 Philippines is an affront to those whose private data was breached and<br \/>\u00a0 also to those locally unemployed people who could easily be hired to do<br \/>\u00a0 this job.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u201cI am calling on hospital chiefs at Tallaght Hospital to reconsider this<br \/>\u00a0 policy of outsourcing transcription services. There is a major risk of<br \/>\u00a0 identity theft and fraud of those people whose data is breached.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u201cI recently asked the Health Minister James Reilly to outline his policy<br \/>\u00a0 on this contracting of clerical work outside of Ireland by some<br \/>\u00a0 hospitals and the minister did not even acknowledge that it is an issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u201cThis is simply not good enough.\u00a0 The minister must intervene to ensure<br \/>\u00a0 the safety of patients\u2019 private data.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u201cAt a time of a major unemployment crisis the minister cannot allow this<br \/>\u00a0 outsourcing to continue.\u201d ENDS<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 Editor\u2019s note: PQ from Deputy Se\u00e1n Crowe is below for your information.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 46.\u00a0 Deputy Se\u00e1n Crowe\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 asked the Minister for Health\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 his<br \/>\u00a0 policy on the practice in some hospitals of contracting routine clerical<br \/>\u00a0 work outside of Ireland; and if he will make a statement on the matter.<br \/>\u00a0 [17909\/11]<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 Minister for Health (Deputy James Reilly):\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It is not a matter of<br \/>\u00a0 Government policy that hospitals or other health services contract<br \/>\u00a0 clerical work outside of Ireland, as suggested by the Deputy. However,<br \/>\u00a0 all bodies in receipt of public funding, not just in the health sector,<br \/>\u00a0 must manage their resources in the most cost effective and efficient<br \/>\u00a0 manner possible.<br \/>\u00a0 The Deputy will also be aware that the Government is also carrying out a<br \/>\u00a0 Comprehensive Review of Expenditure.
