{"id":295,"date":"2011-08-24T20:26:10","date_gmt":"2011-08-24T20:26:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/clothing-and-equipment-no-reduction-evident-says-crowe\/"},"modified":"2011-08-24T20:26:10","modified_gmt":"2011-08-24T20:26:10","slug":"clothing-and-equipment-no-reduction-evident-says-crowe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/clothing-and-equipment-no-reduction-evident-says-crowe\/","title":{"rendered":"Clothing and equipment no reduction evident says Crowe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\"><strong>Clothing and equipment no reduction evident\u00a0says <span class=\"il\">Crowe<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sinn F\u00e9in\u2019s Education Spokesperson, Deputy Se\u00e1n <span class=\"il\">Crowe<\/span>,  has said that with the new school term fast approaching the Government  is failing parents who are facing excessive bills for uniforms,books and  other equipment. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">Deputy <span class=\"il\">Crowe<\/span> said:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\"> \u201cAt a meeting of the Oireachtas  Education Committee in July, Minister Quinn, TD, said that he would exam  the viability of introducing book-lending schemes and cheaper uniforms  in a bid to drive school costs down for parents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">\u201cMinister Quinn met with the St  Vincent de Paul charity and the National Parents Council, two  organisations that deal with parents who are struggling to equip and  cloth their children for school. Current estimates put the costs at  almost \u20ac600 when a child is to attend Secondary school, a significant  amount of money in these cash strapped times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">\u201cAdded to this burden are the  voluntary fees parents are asked to pay, annual photocopying costs  ranging between \u20ac40 and \u20ac80, and \u20ac100 to \u20ac300 for extra-curricular  activities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">&#8220;There is no doubt that with the  implementation of practical measures the financial burden being placed  on parents can be eased.\u00a0The frequent changes of books on the  curriculum, particularly the publication of revised editions, is a way  of allowing publishers to continue to\u00a0exploit the system. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">The purchasing of school uniforms is  also an issue that Minister Quinn promised to address, particularly when  schools advise parents they can only buy from specific outlets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Most parents have now bought the uniforms and no real change has been evident this year.<\/p>\n<p>The availability of school crests to parents doesn&#8217;t seem to have happened in the majority of schools.<\/p>\n<p>Many parents struggling with costs are asking what\u00a0was the point \u00a0if any, ofthe \u00a0Ministers initiative<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">It is increasingly clear that the  Minister\u00a0 must do more than pay lip service to this issue and\u00a0 should  implement practical measures that will help reduce the unacceptable high  costs being faced by families whose children\u00a0will be soon\u00a0attending  school.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Clothing and equipment no reduction evident\u00a0says Crowe Sinn F\u00e9in\u2019s Education Spokesperson, Deputy Se\u00e1n Crowe, has said that with the new school term fast approaching the Government is failing parents who are facing excessive bills for uniforms,books and other equipment.
