{"id":296,"date":"2011-08-24T20:27:40","date_gmt":"2011-08-24T20:27:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/reform-needed-to-combat-unscruplous-landlords-crowe\/"},"modified":"2011-08-24T20:27:40","modified_gmt":"2011-08-24T20:27:40","slug":"reform-needed-to-combat-unscruplous-landlords-crowe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/reform-needed-to-combat-unscruplous-landlords-crowe\/","title":{"rendered":"Reform needed to combat unscruplous landlords-Crowe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\"><strong>Reform needed to combat\u00a0unscruplous landlords &#8211;<span class=\"il\"> Crowe<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">Sinn F\u00e9in\u2019s Education Spokesperson, Deputy Se\u00e1n <span class=\"il\">Crowe<\/span>,  is supporting the Union of Students in Ireland (USI) who are urging  people attending college from September onwards to guard against  unscrupulous landlords. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">Deputy <span class=\"il\">Crowe<\/span> said<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">\u201cI know of many instances when  landlords have failed, with no proper justification, to return the  deposits of students or tenants with whom they have let property.  \u00a0Rather than ensuring tenants comply with the leasing arrangements, some  unscruplous landlords are holding on to deposits and coming up with  bizarre and unreasonable demands\u00a0for witholding the deposits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">\u201cResearch published by the USI has found that:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">\u202240% of students have had their deposit unfairly withheld.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">\u202275% of cases reported to the PRTB are in relation to the deposit retention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">\u2022Over 60% of students have had over \u20ac200 unfairly taken off their deposit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>These statistics are unacceptable and highlight the weakness and  lack of regulation in relation to the rented sector where many landlords  continue to fllout laws and ignore even basic steps like registering..  There needs to be root and branch reform of\u00a0this whole sector and local  authorities need to be resourced to identifey and take action against  those abusing the system.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">\u201cI would encourage anyone renting  property whilst attending third level education to carefully study the  Rent Book and Accommodation Guide that was published last week by the  USI. \u00a0The information booklet has been produced with the support of  Threshold and the Department of the Environment, and it provides  practical information on any accommodation issues a tenant may face  throughout the college year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">\u201cSinn F\u00e9in also supports the  implementation of the Deposit Protection Scheme to protect students and  tenants\u00a0from being ripped off by rogue landlords, and by signing the  petition students and their families can make clear their support for  the USI campaign.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">Notes to editors: A copy of the Rent Book &amp; Accommodation Guide is available from all students&#8217; unions.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reform needed to combat\u00a0unscruplous landlords &#8211; Crowe Sinn F\u00e9in\u2019s Education Spokesperson, Deputy Se\u00e1n Crowe, is supporting the Union of Students in Ireland (USI) who are urging people attending college from September onwards to guard against unscrupulous landlords.
