\u00a0 Sinn F\u00e9in\u2019s Education Spokesperson Deputy S\u00e9an Crowe has supported
\u00a0 Minister Ruairi Quinn\u2019s call for lower school book prices. Deputy Crowe
\u00a0 has been lobbying the minister to force the publishers of school
\u00a0 textbooks to reduce their prices and stop printing unnecessary revised
\u00a0 editions.<\/p>\n
\u00a0 He said: \u201cMost of the cost of sending a child to school, which according
\u00a0 to Barnardo’s is between \u20ac350 and \u20ac805, is spent on text books.<\/p>\n
\u00a0 \u201cI welcome Minister Quinn\u2019s efforts but publishers are saying they will
\u00a0 only agree to a voluntary code of practice regarding prices and new
\u00a0 editions of school books.<\/p>\n
\u00a0 \u201cPublishers should give discounts to schools making bulk purchases of
\u00a0 textbooks and the practice of reprinting revised editions of books must
\u00a0 cease. The Department of Education should look at best practices of
\u00a0 schools with book rental schemes and use this as a template that can be
\u00a0 applied in all schools.<\/p>\n
\u00a0 \u201cLow income families are suffering in the economic crisis and the cost
\u00a0 of sending children to school must be reduced. It is unfortunate that
\u00a0 Minister Quinn\u2019s efforts get results have come too late to help parents
