August 16th, 2012 <\/span><\/p>\n Dublin South West Sinn F\u00e9in TD Se\u00e1n Crowe has slammed the latest\u00a0tactics of the Government who are threatening legal action against people who have refused to pay Household Charge.<\/span><\/p>\n Crowe described the court\u00a0threats\u00a0as \u201cpredictable and a floundering act of desperation.\u201d He said that the\u00a0attempts to impose an unfair revenue-raising tax just\u00a0isn’t working and called on Minister Hogan to abandon his indiscriminate household\u00a0\u00a0tax policy.<\/span><\/p>\n Deputy Crowe said: <\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe threat of legal action against hundreds of thousands of people for non-payment of the Household Charge shows the unfairness of what is an indiscriminate and inequitable tax. <\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIt is the latest\u00a0attempt by the Local Government Management Agency, at the behest of Minister Phil Hogan, to frighten people into paying by sending\u00a0more warning letters, threatening the prospect of a court appearance and\u00a0legal action. <\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe Government\u2019s determination to try\u00a0persecute ordinary people for taking a principled stand against this tax is in contrast to their abject failure to pursue those within the banking sector and big business who played a big part\u00a0in bringing this State to its financial\u00a0knees. <\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThis unjust charge has been a complete failure in terms of revenue raising yet the Fine Gael\/Labour Government has made Local Government dependent upon it, fully realising that major cuts in services will result should it not be paid. <\/span><\/p>\n “The latest\u00a0court threats\u00a0are predictable, and will be seen by many as a\u00a0floundering act of desperation to impose this tax.<\/span><\/p>\n “This latest\u00a0attempt by the Minister Hogan\u00a0and his Government colleagues\u00a0to impose an unfair revenue-raising tax just\u00a0isn’t working with well over half of households still refusing to pay this tax.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cDespite the letters and threats of court, many people\u00a0are even more \u00a0determined not to pay.<\/span><\/p>\n “The Minister should wake up to\u00a0his nightmarish\u00a0reality and\u00a0abandon\u00a0his indiscriminate\u00a0household\u00a0tax\u00a0policy. <\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/strong>“The Household Charge should be abolished once and for all and a fairer inclusive\u00a0taxation strategy put in its place, ensuring that those on higher incomes pay their proper share and seeing that\u00a0the wealth generated or lying dormant\u00a0in Irish society \u00a0is actually\u00a0taxed.\u201d ENDS<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" August 16th, 2012 Dublin South West Sinn F\u00e9in TD Se\u00e1n Crowe has slammed the latest\u00a0tactics of the Government who are threatening legal action against people who have refused to pay Household Charge.
