{"id":5225,"date":"2024-01-22T17:08:26","date_gmt":"2024-01-22T17:08:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/?p=5225"},"modified":"2024-01-22T17:08:26","modified_gmt":"2024-01-22T17:08:26","slug":"government-tds-must-support-sinn-fein-motion-to-stop-vulture-funds-snapping-up-homes-under-the-feet-of-families","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/government-tds-must-support-sinn-fein-motion-to-stop-vulture-funds-snapping-up-homes-under-the-feet-of-families\/","title":{"rendered":"Government TDs must support Sinn F\u00e9in motion to stop vulture funds snapping up homes under the feet of families"},"content":{"rendered":"Sinn F\u00e9in TD for Dublin South West Se\u00e1n Crowe has said that Government TDs in Dublin South West must stand up for the people and vote in favour of Sinn F\u00e9in\u2019s motion to stop vulture funds from bulk-purchasing homes from under the feet of struggling home buyers.<br \/><br \/>The debate on the motion will take place on Tuesday evening, ahead of the vote on Wednesday evening.<br \/><br \/>Teachta Crowe said:<br \/><br \/>\u201cOn Wednesday evening, the D\u00e1il will vote on our motion to tackle the unacceptable practice of investment funds snapping up family homes.<br \/><br \/>\u201cI am calling on the three Government TDs locally to stand up for workers, families, and all aspiring homeowners in Dublin South West by voting to support Sinn F\u00e9in&#8217;s motion to end this scandalous practice.<br \/><br \/>\u201cThe purchase of 46 family homes at Belcamp Manor in Balgriffin, Dublin by an investment fund was yet another blow to struggling first time buyers.<br \/><br \/>\u201cAdditional figures released to Sinn F\u00e9in Finance spokesperson Pearse Doherty by the Department of Finance show that since the government\u2019s half-baked measures were introduced, over 1,200 homes have been snapped up by these funds.<br \/><br \/>\u201cThese are more than 1,200 homes that should have been available to workers and families to buy. Last year alone, over 620 homes were bought from under struggling home buyers.<br \/><br \/>\u201cUnless Sinn F\u00e9in\u2019s proposals to stop this are introduced, funds will continue to snap up homes that should be available for workers and families to buy.<br \/><br \/>\u201cTDs in Dublin South West have a serious decision to make here \u2013 either they can allow this to continue, or they can support Sinn F\u00e9in\u2019s motion in the D\u00e1il to stop it.<br \/><br \/>\u201cFor some time, Sinn F\u00e9in argued for new laws and a higher rate of stamp duty to be charged to stop this unfair and unacceptable practice.<br \/><br \/>\u201cAfter public and political pressure, the government belatedly moved in May 2021 to introduce a 10 percent stamp duty on the bulk purchase of family homes by investment funds.<br \/><br \/>\u201cAt the time, Sinn F\u00e9in warned in the D\u00e1il that this charge was too low to act as an effective deterrent and that has proved to be the case.<br \/><br \/>\u201cIt is now time for the local government TDs to support Sinn F\u00e9in\u2019s proposals and support would-be homebuyers.\u201d <br \/>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sinn F\u00e9in TD for Dublin South West Se\u00e1n Crowe has said that Government TDs in Dublin South West must stand up for the people and vote in favour of Sinn F\u00e9in\u2019s motion to stop vulture funds from bulk-purchasing homes from under the feet of struggling home buyers.
