Crowe said he believe it would have been an ideal opportunity\u00a0to put domestic violence squarely on the political agenda of all EU member states during\u00a0the Presidency and said that the figures in the survey scream out for action.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Se\u00e1n Crowe\u00a0said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSafe Ireland\u2019s recent\u00a0survey published today reports that 500 women and 300 children were seeking supports from\u00a0domestic violence services on a single day late last year highlighted the scale of problem and need for action by the government.\u00a0Some\u00a0\u00a0girls as young as sixteen are contacting Safe Ireland in need of support, safety and services.<\/p>\n<p>These Survey figures scream out for action to be taken.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnother global study published by World Health Organisation starkly sets out the prevalence of violence towards women and girls across many societies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt suggests that\u00a0a third of women living in Europe will experience violence at some point in their lives. That is\u00a0an unacceptable statistic and uncomfortable reading for most men, yet Ireland has yet to even sign the European Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are also disturbing figures of domestic violence against men..<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIreland\u2019s Presidency of the EU was an opportunity for the government to put domestic violence squarely on the political agenda of all member states. This for whatever reason,\u00a0did not happen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe\u00a0Coalition&#8217;s\u00a0Programme for Government commits it\u00a0to the introduction of consolidated and reformed domestic violence legislation but when\u00a0questions are\u00a0asked about when we can expect the legislation the Justice Minister Alan Shatter\u00a0tells us that he has other legislative priorities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShatter has cited property rights as a supposed\u00a0barrier to introducing a 24\/7 on call system for emergency barring orders. This is also happening\u00a0while\u00a0abused women\u00a0and their children who are seeking a safe\u00a0refuge from violence and abuse, continue to be turned away because of a lack of available beds \u00a0and suitable safe accomodation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany Governments across Europe and beyond refuse to\u00a0accept that a cultural shift and multi-disciplinary solutions are required to end the prevalence of violence against women and children in society.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen may no longer be locked up in in Institutional\u00a0laundries or children beaten with straps and canes\u00a0in\u00a0schools but it is clear that this government has not\u00a0really learnt anything\u00a0from the mistakes of those\u00a0who held\u00a0power before them.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The figure of 500 women and 300 children seeking supports from domestic violence services on a single day is an inditement of Irish men and\u00a0society and needs to be responded to as a matter of urgency by government.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Crowe Says\u00a0Violence Against Women Survey Screams Out For Action Dublin South West representative Se\u00e1n Crowe TD has said that\u00a0Safe Ireland\u2019s\u00a0One Day\u00a0Survey of domestic violence needs to be responded to and acted on by Government\u00a0and said it was disappointing that they failed to prioritise the issue during Ireland&#8217;s Presidency of the European Union.
