Dublin South West TD Seán Crowe has called on the Government to commit to providing extra funding to tackle homelessness and the increase of those sleeping rough in the capital.

The Dublin South West Deputy made his remarks following the announcement by Focus Ireland that the number of families becoming homeless in Dublin has more than doubled in the last six months.

Deputy Seán Crowe said:

“This morning housing charity Focus Ireland reported an 18% increase in demand for their services in 2013. They have also said that the number of families presenting as homeless in Dublin has doubled from 8 to 16 every month.

“Today’s graphic figures tell us a simple truth – the government’s chosen strategy of austerity is a contributing factor in forcing many families onto the streets of Dublin.

“Following these statistics, the Government strategy of eliminating homelessness by 2016 looks like another pipedream.

“Homeless people and those creating supports for the growing numbers forced to sleep rough tonight need to know when, if ever, will this government intend to tackle this serious crisis.

“A logical step would be for the Government as a matter of urgency to provide extra funding and accommodation to meet the increase and rise of homelessness in Dublin.”
