Climate Change Needs Action – Crowe
Dublin South West TD Seán Crowe has described the Government’s failure to introduce a comprehensive Climate Change Bill and to deal with issues of flooding and environmental damage as “foolhardy.”
Deputy Seán Crowe said:
“The Government gave a commitment in their Programme for Government to introduce a Climate Change Bill, but three long years later it still hasn’t surfaced.
“Climate Change continues to be an ongoing issue not just in Ireland but on a global level.
“In Ireland in recent years, we have seen all too frequently the damaging impact severe flooding that exacts a huge cost from society in terms of human suffering. It also has a huge monetary cost to families, local authorities and the state.“To sit on their hands and do nothing is not an option. The new Environment Minister needs to get his act together and address the issue of climate change and the growing impact it is having on our society.
“This is essential for economic growth; for protection of the environment and for global environmental justice.“In 2013 Sinn Féin introduced just such a bill and there is no reason why the government cannot use this template for their bill.
“Sinn Féin’s Climate Change bill is comprehensive and can be a building block for Ireland’s low carbon, sustainable economic growth.
“We need the government to support our bill and to stop sitting on their hands with such a critical issue”.
