Sinn Féin’s spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, Seán Crowe TD, has welcomed the news that the Ukrainian Government and eastern rebels have signed a ceasefire agreement, which now enters into immediate effect.

Deputy Seán Crowe said:

“Reading through media and other reports I understand that this is a preliminary truce and there is a lot more to be negotiated before there is a comprehensive peace deal.

“However this is a very important first step and I warmly welcome the potential this now opens up for real peace.

“The onus is now on all sides to abide by this ceasefire agreement and work towards achieving a lasting peace process.

“The east of Ukraine has been heavily affected by the conflict. There is a shortage of food, clothing, electricity, and clean water in many areas, with vital infrastructure having been destroyed. I hope that this truce will allow humanitarian aid to be urgently delivered to all those in need.”
