Crowe Gives Racism the Red Card
Dublin South West TD, Seán Crowe, played in an anti-racism football match in Irishtown Stadium, for members of the Houses of the Oireachtas and members of the Diplomatic Corps based in Ireland.
The event was organised as one of the activities to mark UEFA Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) forthnight of action In all UEFA affiliated countries, activities are taking place at all levels of the game to promote the anti- racism message. In Ireland, activities are being co-ordinated by the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) Intercultural Programme and Show Racism the Red Card.
Speaking after the match Deputy Crowe said:
“I want to thank Show Racism the Red Card and the FAI Intercultural Programme for making this event happen and for inviting me to play in the match.
“I was delighted to be able to play in the match and send out a signal that racism has no place in our society. Sports players can sometimes become the subject of racist abuse by fans and fellow athletes, but sport can also be a tool for removing racism from society by bringing people from different races together.
“This match was part of UEFA’s two weeks of action against racism in football and I commend them on their proactive approach to battling racism in football over these two weeks.
“We have recently seen numerous high profile allegations of racism in professional football in Europe and I am happy to see UEFA instigate two weeks of action to highlight the racism has absolutely no place in football, at any level.”
