Crowe welcomes end of courtroom horsehair wigs tradition
Sinn Féin TD Seán Crowe has welcomed the ending of the outdated tradition of judges horsehair wearing wigs in court. Deputy Crowe described the wearing of wigs as outdated, pompous and a waste of taxpayers’ money.
He said:
“Payouts of €2,200 plus for each judge’s wig are indefensible particularly with an outdated, pompous and imperialist tradition that benefits nobody.
“At a time when special needs assistants are losing their jobs, hospital wards are closing, rent allowance is being cut and thousands face losing their medical cards, it is plain inexcusable to be spending such incredible amounts on courtroom pomp and ceremony.
“It’s long past the time that priorities were set right and the system changed and I welcome the ending of this tradition.”
