Dublin South West TD, Seán Crowe, has welcomed the opening of a new sensory garden for visually impaired and other users in the Firhouse area. The new garden is located at the side of Firhouse Shopping Centre and was the brainchild of members of Firhouse Central Remedial Clinic (CRC) many of whom have impairment. The Sinn Féin TD congratulated the members of CRC who came with the idea that was rolled out by South Dublin County Council said the initiative needs to be replicated right across the county.

A sensory garden has a collection of plants and materials with different textures, shapes, colours, scents, and heights. It is laid out in such a way as to stimulate the senses – seeing, hearing, smelling, touching and tasting.

Deputy Seán Crowe said:

“I want to congratulate all those involved in making this sensory garden a reality.

“The opening of a new sensory garden for visually impaired and other users in the Firhouse area is a welcome development. It also has easy access for wheelchair users.

“The new garden, located at the side of Firhouse Shopping Centre, was the brainchild of members of Firhouse CRC, many of whom have impairment. I want to congratulate all the members of Firhouse CRC who came with the idea that was eventually taken up and rolled out by South Dublin County Council.”

Crowe continued:

“This disability friendly initiative needs to be replicated right across the county. We need to make our parks and communities more inclusive and initiatives like this sensory garden are the way forward.”
