Empty units scandal at Gleann na hEorna

Dublin South West representative Seán Crowe TD has said that is unacceptable and a scandal that a situation has been allowed develop at Gleann na hEorna in Tallaght where housing units have been allowed to lie empty for years while South Dublin County Council and Respond Housing argue over who owes who money.

Deputy Seán Crowe said:

“It is simply unacceptable that two years after housing units are completed at Gleann na hEorna and in the middle of a housing crisis, a row between South Dublin County Council and Respond Voluntary Housing should hold up the allocation of badly needed housing units.

“The delay is over millions in VAT money that Respond claims is owed to them from the local authority.

“We know that every day people are presenting themselves as homeless or are looking for accommodation in South Dublin. The list for Social housing is getting longer and longer and rental accommodation in Dublin is not able to meet the huge demand.

“Surely common sense should prevail and this housing should be given to families and individuals who are the victims of this housing shortage.

“I am calling on to South Dublin County Council to sit down with Respond Voluntary Housing and immediately resolve this issue.

“It is unacceptable and a scandal that new and available housing should lie for two long years empty and not allocated to those in need.”
