South Dublin County Council passes motion calling on Harney to resign

by Seán Crowe TD

Tallaght based Sinn Féin Councillor Seán Crowe has welcomed the passing of a
motion at today’s council meeting which calls on Health Minister Mary Harney to
resign or be sacked before another health crisis emerges.

The motion passed today (full text below) also deplored the failure in Tallaght
Hospital to read thousands of x-rays and to process thousands of GP referral
letters and called for an end to the two-tier public/private hospital system and the
development of a new single-tier system with access for all based on medical need
alone.

Speaking after today’s Council meeting Councillor Crowe said:

“I welcome the passing of today’s motion. The motion calls for the resignation or
sacking of Mary Harney as Minister for Health before another health crisis emerges.
I put down this motion three months ago. In the meantime the scandal at Lourdes
Hospital has emerged. How many more crises need to emerge before this Minister
resigns or is forced from her position.

Sinn Féin Councillor Seán Crowe Addresses Integration Conference

by Seán Crowe TD

Sinn Féin Councillor Seán Crowe addressed the 2nd annual Manyu Elements, Cultural and
Developmental Association Conference in Ballymount last Saturday, 14th August. The
theme of this year’s conference was An Integrated Ireland for the 21st Century.

Cllr Crowe spoke of how immigration is still a new phenomenon to many Irish and some
have yet to adjust to it. He stated that it is only through being pro-active and learning from
the mistakes of other countries that true integration in our communities can be achieved.

As an active supporter of the undocumented Irish in the United States, Cllr Crowe urged the
Irish Government to not subject immigrants in Ireland who want to work to the same fate as
their Irish counterparts in the US.

Councillor Crowe said:

“Current Government policy is undermining the integration process. Funding for anti-
racism and integration has been slashed, resulting in the National Consultative Committee
on Racism and Inter-culturalism being dissolved and the Equality Authority being rendered
almost toothless.

Crowe welcomes news of integrated transport ticket

by Seán Crowe TD

Dublin Sinn Féin Councillor Sean Crowe, a board Member of South Dublin Tourism, has welcomed the news that the introduction of an integrated transport ticket is soon to become a reality.

Councillor Crowe, who has been consistent in calling on the Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey and his predecessor to introduce this ticket to Dublin, said the new ticket will have a benefit for tourism and employment across both Dublin City and County.

Speaking today councillor Crowe said, “This is a smarter and more positive ticket for commuters as they can use multiple forms of transport such as train, light rail and bus in their day to day lives for both leisure activities and accessing work. It is hard to understand the years of delay in introducing this type of ticket.

Call for extra Garda resources after four stabbings in Kiltalawn last night

by Seán Crowe TD

Sinn Féin Councillor Seán Crowe has called for extra Garda resources to be deployed in the Tallaght area after four people were stabbed in Kiltalawn last night.

Councillor Crowe, a member of the South Dublin County Policing and Justice Forum, said knife crime in Tallaght is a particular problem and it’s only a matter of time before a fatality occurs if action is not taken.

He said: “Four people were stabbed in the Kiltalawn area of Tallaght last night.  While none of the victims injuries are believed to be life threatening knife crime in Tallaght is a growing problem and it is only a matter of time before a fatality occurs if action is not taken.

“I highlighted this problem back in March after a three separated stabbings took place over three consecutive nights in the Jobstown area.

“While many of these attacks would not be reported to the Gardaí for fear of retaliatory attacks the local accident and emergency department in Tallaght Hospital would be fully aware of the scale of the problem particularly at weekends.  There needs to be a formal structure put in place for communication between the hospital and the Gardaí.

Crowe launches Sinn Féin proposals on youth unemployment

by Seán Crowe TD

Sinn Féin Councillor Seán Crowe this week launched a set of proposals aimed at making self employment a realistic option for young people.

Councillor Crowe said enabling the young unemployed to start up new businesses would be a huge boost to the local economy in Tallaght and other unemployment black-spots throughout the state.

Speaking to the media at Leinster House on Thursday Councillor Crowe said: “More and more young people are leaving Ireland.  If this continues, the ability of the economy to recover will be undermined as we will have exported all our young skilled workers.

“Just 1.3% of workers aged between 15 and 24 are self employed as most young people have neither the confidence nor the practical support to start up their own enterprises.   Setting up their own businesses needs to be made a real option for the young unemployed.

“There are many young people in Tallaght who would love to stay in Ireland and build their own business but just don’t see this as possible at the moment.  New businesses fit for a new economy needed to be created – the young unemployed are the people best placed to creative innovative modern business that can thrive into the future.

Unemployment

One in four young people are now unemployed.  Young men are worst affected with one in three men under the age of 25 being out of work.  Dole payments for young people have been slashed and it is estimated that 60,000 people emigrated in the last year with many more expected to leave this year. Irish Language Resources

by Seán Crowe TD

“The Irish Language … it is well to remember that nations which submit to conquest or races which abandon their language in favour of that of an oppressor do so, not because of the altruistic motives, or because of love of brotherhood of man, but from a slavish and cringing spirit.” James Connolly, The Harp.
