Dublin South West Sinn Féin TD, Seán Crowe, has called on Irish football supporters to remember the 6 Irish fans who were murdered 22 years ago while they watched Ireland play Italy in the 1994 World Cup.
The fans were Adrian Rogan (34), Patrick O’Hare (35), Eamon Byrne (39), Malcolm Jenkinson (53), Daniel McCreanor (59), and 87-year-old Barney Green.
Deputy Seán Crowe said:
“People across the island of Ireland will be gathering today to watch Ireland play Belgium, just as they did on this day 22 years ago when Ireland played Italy in the 1994 World Cup.
“On that fateful day a group of Irish football fans had gathered in the Heights Bar in Loughinisland, Co. Down, when a UVF gang burst into the pub and opened fire. The sectarian attack left 6 men dead and 5 seriously injured.
“A recently released report from the Police Ombudsman, Dr Michael Maguire, into the massacre is unambiguous. It details systemic collusion between British agents, the RUC, and the UVF death squad who carried out the attack.
“I am hoping that as fans gather in Ireland, in Bordeaux, and around to world to watch this match that they respectfully remember the 6 victims of this massacre, who had similarly gathered 22 years ago today to cheer on the Irish team.”
