Speaking after attending a meeting of the Sinn Féin Oireachtas team,

together with party president Gerry Adams, Dáil leader Caoimhghín Ó

Caoláin and a number of the party’s candidates in key constituencies in

the next General Election, Councillor Seán Crowe said a credible recovery plan rather than an EU bail-out is required to save the Irish economy.

Councillor Crowe said:

“This economic crisis, brought on by the policies of the Fianna

Fáil/Green Government and its predecessors, is worsening on a daily

basis. The Government has put out economic sovereignty on the line and

the people in hock to international money-lenders.

“We do not need an EU bail-out.  That will only further indebt us.

“What we do need is a credible recovery plan – credible both nationally

and internationally. This requires the abandonment of the Government’s

disastrous banking policy and the removal from office of the Government

itself.

“We need a General Election as soon as possible and at all costs we must try to prevent the passing of the threatened slash-and-burn Budget which will deepen the recession.

“Sinn Féin has put forward a credible recovery plan based on providing

stimulus for jobs, revenue saving and raising and protection of vital

public services and social supports. Others, such as the ICTU, have made similar proposals.

“The Government is about to publish and attempt to implement a four-year plan for which it has no mandate and can have no mandate. Let it publish the plan but then let it dissolve the Dáil and call a General Election and let the people decide.

“Sinn Féin is ready for that contest and today we met to place our

organisation in key constituencies on an election footing.” ENDS
