Dublin South West Sinn Féin TD, Seán Crowe, attended a commemoration for the 39th Anniversary of the Dublin and Monaghan bombings in Dublin today.

Speaking after the wreath laying ceremony at the Talbot Street memorial to those who died, he called on the British Government to release all the security files it has on the Dublin Monaghan bombings and help bring closure to the survivors and bereaved.

Deputy Seán Crowe said:

“I would like to extend my sympathy and solidarity to all the survivors and bereaved by the Dublin and Monaghan bombings on the 17th May 1974.

“The Dublin and Monaghan bombings led to largest loss of life in the conflict and it was one of the most tragic days of the conflict.

“We now know that loyalists planted the bombs, but that in the 1970s loyalists didn’t have the capability or expertise to construct the type of bombs which caused such devastation on the streets of Dublin and Monaghan.

“They are therefore widely believed to have been carried out with the back up of elements of the British security establishment.

“Justice for the Forgotten has long campaigned for the British Government to release the flies it currently has on this atrocity, so that progress can be made in investigations into the Dublin and Monaghan bombings.

“A key element of our peace process and national reconciliation is a requirement on all of us to address the tragic human consequences of the past.

“The families of the victims of the Dublin and Monaghan attacks are demanding truth and justice. It’s time for the British Government to release their files on these bombing and give these families closure.”
