Speaking following the release of an EU Agency for Fundamental Rights report on gender violence across the European Union, Sinn Féin TD for Dublin South West Seán Crowe called on the Government to address and tackle the issue of violence against women.

Seán Crowe said:

“This research is truly alarming. A third of those surveyed have been victims of physical or sexual violence since the age of fifteen.

“These figures are shocking and cannot be brushed aside or ignored by the Government.

“Even more alarming, the survey highlights that austerity measures have a real and devastating impact on female victims of violence.

“For example, in Ireland, financial support for organisations that offer refuge and support to abused women decreased since the start of the crisis.

“According to Safe Ireland, “five years of recession and austerity has pared an already fragile and fragmented system of support for women and children right down to the bone.”

“This is not good enough. The government need to acknowledge the extent of violence against women and children, and provide resources for organisations that offer them support.

“More than just support, these women deserve appropriate help. Many of their lives are in danger.

“It is the duty of government to protect the vulnerable and protect women fleeing from violence.

“This will only happen if there are real supports, including secure, safe and available places in towns and cities across Ireland.”
