Sinn Féin TD for Dublin South West and party spokesperson on Foreign Affairs Seán Crowe has welcomed an apology from District Judge Anthony Halpin following his inappropriate, inaccurate and unacceptable comments regarding Muslims.

In Tallaght District Court on Thursday, Judge Anthony Halpin said, “Muslims think they can actually beat their wives”.

Seán Crowe TD said;

“I welcome the withdrawal of these inappropriate, inaccurate and unacceptable comments.

“I fully acknowledge Judge Halpin’s apology for any hurt he may have caused and his request for forgiveness, yet these occasions remind and demonstrate the need for a judicial council that can deal with complaints regarding judicial conduct.

“I think it is astonishing that the public are subject to a judicial system where there is no avenue through which to lodge a complaint regarding inappropriate behaviour.

“I wish to reiterate Sinn Féin’s call for the introduction of legislation for a Judicial Council.

“Sinn Féin would also welcome and support the introduction of human rights and equality training for the judicial community.

“Racism and sectarianism must be challenged at every opportunity.”
