Parents should contact SEC and register complaints on Higher Leaving Cert Maths exam – Deputy Seán Crowe
Sinn Féin’s Education Spokesperson Seán Crowe has encouraged teachers and the parents of children who are critical of this week’s Leaving Cert Higher Level Maths paper to contact the State Exam’s Commission and register their complaint.
Deputy Crowe said: “There has been widespread criticism of the Higher Leaving Cert Maths Exam with parents and teachers questioning the fairness of the paper’s content.
“In this the first year of the new Project Maths syllabus, which is supposed to encourage students to take higher maths, it seems the exam paper contained serious flaws. The wording of some of the questions used terminology that was unduly complicated and the syllabus that had been taught in schools was not reflected throughout the paper.
“Teachers and parents who have concerns about this exam should register their views with the State Exam’s Commission and insist their complaint is logged. This is important in order to ensure there is an impetus on the part of the Commission to take on part the views of students who sat the test and to make the necessary improvements.”
Parents wishing to contact the State Exam’s Commission can do so by ringing 090-6442700; by writing to the State Examinations Commission, Cornamaddy, Athlone, Co. Westmeath.
