Sinn Féin TD for Dublin South West Seán Crowe has condemned the latest in an escalating series of attacks on postal workers in the area. An attack yesterday in Tallaght resulted in the hospitalisation of a worker and the theft of an An Post van and its contents.
Teachta Crowe said:
“This is just the latest in a series of attacks on An Post workers and it has to stop. These workers are from the communities they serve and the risk to their lives makes it impossible for them to go about their daily work.
“Yesterday saw the hospitalisation of a worker going about his rounds and the theft of his van.
“This is far from an isolated incident and workers are now discussing withdrawing their labour across the whole of West Tallaght. The effect this would have on the local community cannot be underestimated.
“I have been in contact with the worker’s union, the CWU, to express my regret at what happened and my solidarity with the postman.
“I will be in contact today with Garda management to discuss this latest attack and what the Gardaí and local community can do to stop these attacks and ongoing criminality.
“Attacks on public services and workers are an attack on our communities Those carrying out these vicious attacks need to be removed from society and put in jail.
“I am hoping that there is sufficient evidence and forensics available following this latest attack and those responsible are swiftly brought to court and face heavy sentences.
“I would urge anyone who has information on this or other attacks to do the right thing, to do what is best for your community, and contact Tallaght Garda at 01 666 6000 or ring the Garda confidential line at 1800 666 111.”
