Sinn Féin’s spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, Seán Crowe TD, has expressed his condolences to the family of Robert Serra and his wife Maria Herrera after they were murdered in their home.

Robert Serra, who was 27 and a member of the ruling United Socialist Party (PSUV), was the youngest parliamentarian in Venezuela and was seen as a rising star of PSUV, who had a close relationship with President Maduro.

Deputy Crowe said:

“I am appalled by the brutal murder of Robert Serra and his wife Maria Herrera, and send my condolences to their families.

“It is being unofficially reported that preliminary investigations indicate the couple were tortured and executed in a premeditated murder.

“There have been an increase in attacks on left-wing politicians and government officials in the country and I send my solidarity to the Government of Venezuela at this difficult time.”
