Crowe welcomes report on religion in primary schools

Sinn Féin Education Spokesperson Seán Crowe has welcomed the report from the Forum on Patronage and Pluralism which has called for a review of the rule that obliges National Schools prioritise the teaching of religion.

Speaking from Cork today where he is an invited guest at the Association of Secondary Teachers in Ireland (ASTI) conference Deputy Crowe said the report is about providing options for parents.

He said:

“It is important as Ireland becomes a more multi-cultural place to live that our education system evolves to facilitate that change.

“This is about providing options for parents of non-Catholic children or parents who do not wish to have their children educated in a school that prioritises the teaching of religion.

“I welcome today’s report and urge Minister Rúairí Quinn to act swiftly on its many recommendations.”
